Cape Cod Writers’ Conference
The 46th annual Cape Cod Writers’
Conference will be held from August 17 to August 22 at the Craigville
Conference Center in a Cape Cod village overlooking Nantucket Sound. The
program offers workshops in poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction, as well as
manuscript evaluations and personal conferences with faculty, which includes
poets Dan Tobin, fiction writers Joanne Ferguson and Sara Pennypacker, creative
nonfiction writer Anya Achtenberg, and editor Wallace Exman. The fee for a
weeklong workshop is $150; a series of three personal conferences is $150. The

Colrain Poetry Manuscript Conference
The Colrain Poetry Manuscript Conference
will be held from August 22 to August 25 and from October 24 to October 27 at
the Round House Lodge in Colrain, Massachusetts. Designed to “set poets with a
manuscript-in-progress on a path towards book publication,” the conference
features a manuscript preparation workshop, meetings with poetry press editors,
and readings. Participants include poets Joan Houlihan of the Concord Poetry
Center, Frederick Marchant of the creative writing program at Suffolk
University, and Ellen Dore Watson of the Poetry Center at Smith College; and
editors Susan Kan of Perugia Press, Jeffrey Levine of Tupelo Press, Martha
Rhodes of Four Way Books, and Jeffrey Shotts of Graywolf Press. The cost of the

Footpaths to Creativity Residency Program
The Footpaths
to Creativity Center offers residencies of one week to one year to poets,
fiction writers, and creative nonfiction writers on a small, secluded island in
the Azores Archipelago of Portugal. Up to four residents can be accommodated at
a time. The residencies include a private bedroom, studio space, and shared
bath and kitchen. The suggested residency fee is $30 per night. Work study
options are available. Submit a published book or a writing sample of at least
10 pages, a letter of proposal, a resumé, and three recommendations with a $20

Jentel Artist Residency
Program
Jentel Artist Residency Program offers four-week
residencies 11 months of the year to poets, fiction writers, and creative nonfiction writers on a
cattle ranch in the Lower Piney Creek Valley, 20 miles east of Sheridan,
Wyoming. Each residency includes a private room, access to a common living area,
separate work space, and a $400 stipend. Residents are responsible for food and
travel expenses. Writers living in the United States who are over 24 years old
and who are not matriculated students are eligible. For residencies from
January 15 to May 13, 2009, submit two copies of up to 10 pages of published or
unpublished poetry or up to 20 pages of published or unpublished prose and

Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts,
located in the Missouri River town of Nebraska City, offers residencies of two

North Cascades Institute
The annual “Thunder Arm Nature Writing
Retreat” will be held from July 30 to August 3 at the North Cascades Environmental
Learning Center in Washington’s North Cascades National Park. This year’s
faculty includes creative nonfiction writers Clyde Ford, Barbara Sjoholm, and
Ana Maria Spagna. Tuition is $325 to $795, depending on accommodations. “Beats
on the Peaks: Lookout Poets of the North Cascades,” a camping-based literary workshop
led by creative nonfiction writer Jeff Muse and park historian Gerry Cook, will
take place between July 31 and August 3 on Ross Lake in North Cascades National

The first Orcas Island Writers Festival

Power of Words Conference
The Power of
Words: Liberation Through the Spoken, Written, and Sung Word Conference will be
held from September 12 to September 15 at Goddard College in Plainfield,
Vermont. Organized by the college’s Transformative Language Arts concentration,
the conference features readings, roundtable discussions, and workshops in
poetry and fiction. This year’s faculty includes poet Janet Aalfs and fiction
writer Walter Mosley. Tuition ranges from $210 to $270. Pre- or post-conference

The first Springfed Writers’ Retreat

Virginia Center for the Creative Arts
The Virginia Center for
the Creative Arts offers residencies of two weeks to two months to poets,
fiction writers, and creative nonfiction writers, for a working retreat on a
450-acre estate at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, approximately 60
miles south of Charlottesville. Open year-round, the center accommodates 22
artists at a time and provides separate working and living quarters as well as
all meals. Residents may use the facilities of nearby Sweet Briar College. There is no residency fee, but writers are asked to make a daily
suggested contribution of $30 to $60. For
residencies from February through May 2009, submit three copies of 6 to 10
poems, up to two short stories or essays, or the first chapter or 20 pages of a

The 12th annual Zoetrope Short Story Writers’ Workshop will
be held from August 29 to September 5 at Francis Ford Coppola’s Blancaneaux
Lodge on the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve in Belize, Central America. The
program offers short fiction workshops led byAll-Story editor Michael Ray, as well as guided writing exercises,
