Author's Bio

I am the author of Watching TV with the Red Chinese, a novel; Down in the Flood, a collection of stories; Street and Above Floodstage: a narrative poem, poetry chapbooks; and In the Debris Field, a novella and winner of the 2018 Bath Flash Fiction International Novella-in-Flash Award. My fiction and poetry have been published in the U.S. in over fifty different magazines and journals, including Esquire, Arts & Letters, American Short Fiction, Poetry Quarterly, Southern Poetry Review, The Journal of Microliterature, and many others, and internationally in Frank (France), Revista Neo (Portugal), and Flash: The International Short-Short Story Magazine (England). My work also appears in several anthologies, including Racing Home: New Stories by Award-Winning North Carolina Writers, This Is Where We Live: Short Stories by 25 Contemporary North Carolina Writers and The Southern Poetry Anthology. Three of my stories have been reprinted in New Stories from the South: The Year’s Best, and I have been included three times on The Best American Short Stories “Distinguished Story List.” For thirty years I have served as editor or associate editor of Tar River Poetry, a nationally ranked magazine of verse.
