This issue’s Deadlines section lists a total of 118 contests, sponsored by 85 organizations, offering an estimated $2,709,243 in prize money. More than half of that money will be given to winners of writing fellowships awarded by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. Of the 118 contests, 106 (90 percent) charge entry fees (the median entry fee is $20), but those fee-charging contests offer only $275,993 (10 percent) of the total prize money.
