For every book sold by Stalking Horse Press (stalkinghorsepress.com), a portion of the proceeds will go to a charitable organization of the author’s choosing. “The press itself is disinterested in money,” says James Reich, the founder and publisher of the Santa Fe, New Mexico–based press. “I want to publish interesting books and to help people at the same time.”
With its first two titles published in October, the press is off to a good start: D. Foy’s novel Patricide will help support Mid-Atlantic Bully Buddies, a dog-rescue charity; and Michael J. Wilson’s poetry collection, A Child of Storm, will aid the Transgender Resource Center of New Mexico. Reich plans to publish six to ten titles—mostly poetry collections and novels, with some story collections and works of nonfiction—each year. Poetry collections by Jennifer MacBain-Stephens and Jessie Janeshek, as well as novels by Scot Sothern, duncan b. barlow, and Kurt Baumeister are slated for release in 2017. “If your work is spiky, angular, errant, unconcerned with bourgeois tendencies and novels of manners, then Stalking Horse might be the press for you,” Reich says. “The [poetry] we like is sonorous and dissonant in good measures, and works on the page at least as well as it does in performance.” Submissions, with a three-dollar reading fee, are open year-round via Submittable.
