Author's Bio

My new book of 8 short stories and a novella is THESE AMERICANS, which explores what it means to be an American, from the birth of a child to Indian immigrants, to the death of a first-generation mother. My novel And Laughter Fell from the Sky is "a stirring contemporary love story about two young Indian-Americans trying to find love and their place in the world, while dealing with the confines and pressures of their culture and their families." My short fiction has been published in many literary magazines and anthologies. I am also the author of two novels for children: Aruna's Journeys and The Moon Over Crete. I've written three nonfiction books. Ela Bhatt: Uniting Women in India is a biography for young people, published in 2000 by the Feminist Press. Utopias in American History is a reference encyclopedia published in 2008 by ABC-CLIO. Poverty and Government in America will be out in 2009 from ABC-CLIO.
