The Writer/Editor will serve as an integral part of the Marketing and Communications team. As part of the storytelling unit, the Writer/Editor will create content for MSU College of Law. Content will vary in subject matter and medium, and the Writer/Editor will proactively seek out story opportunities among faculty, staff, alumni, and students. From faculty research to student success stories, they will develop materials for many audiences, including undergraduate students considering law school, mid-career professionals developing a new subset of expertise, and alumni with decades of experience in legal practice.
The Writer/Editor must be motivated to collaborate in an energetic and creative environment. The Marketing and Communications team consists of a senior director, a digital communications manager, graphic designer, a web developer, and student assistants. The Writer/Editor will report to the Senior Director of Marketing and Communications. They will be responsible for managing their own projects.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- 50% Writes copy as a cross-functional content creator for the College of Law.
- Contributes stories to the College of Law’s regular editorial plan, including e-newsletters, digital stories, MSUToday pieces, and more.
- Writes alumni, faculty, and student profiles.
- Drafts recruitment content for academic programs.
- Writes news stories and press releases.
- 20% Edits and fact-checks copy for all College of Law materials created by the Marketing and Communications Office team members and for a wide range of internal clients.
- 10% Conducts frequent outreach (in-person and Zoom interviews) with students, alumni, and friends of the College of Law.
- 10% Performs project management duties (including managing design work, coordinating digital releases, and collaborating with clients on multi-stage review process) in a progressively more responsible manner.
- 10% Provides coverage and content support for various social media platforms.
REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Journalism, Communications Arts, Advertising, or related fields; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in management, publications design and editing; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

- Work is normally performed in a typical office environment.
- Level of exposure to physical risk is very limited to none.
